US 1 used to serve as the secondary north-south route through Rhode Island before I-95.
Route 3 served as the primary since it took a much shorter path to Providence than did US 1. US 1 is one of two US routes in Rhode Island that have a bypass/business split. The split occurs in Warwick where US 1 Bypass uses the Post Road Bypass and US 1 Business uses Post Road. US 1 Business is what's officially recognized by RIDOT as US 1. US 1 runs 56.8 miles in Rhode Island.
A word of note: US 1 was re-aligned in Providence sometime in the 1990s due to the destruction of Charles Street between Mill Street and
US 44, which occurred in 1985. The alignment left its multiplex with
US 44 at Charles Street and went up Charles Street to Randall Street, then Randall Street to North Main Street. The current alignment is shown in the Providence section of this page.
