Route 37 is a freeway whose primary purpose is to provide access to T.F. Green Airport and Warwick. It was originally to be part of the first plan for Interstate 895. This plan would've created an eastern belt around Providence, serving Barrington and East Providence, then ending at I-195. This freeway was never completed and thus, this small section that was completed, between I-295 and I-95, received the number 37 after I-895 bit the dust. Later on, there was a second plan for I-895 involving Newport. For more information on that, please see Route 138. Later on down the line, Route 37 was also studied for possible incorporation into a planned Interstate 84 that would've connected Hartford and Providence. For more information on Interstate 84, please see US 6. Route 37 runs 2.3 miles in Rhode Island.
