US 6 is, to this day, the primary trans-Rhode Island route. Since there are no straight east-west freeways, this old road is the closest thing. US 6 is one of two US routes in Rhode Island that has a bypass/business split. The split occurs in Scituate where US 6 Bypass uses the North Scituate Bypass and US 6 Business uses Danielson Pike. The US 6 Business route is signed as US 6, and the US 6 Bypass is signed as "Bypass US 6", but officially, RIDOT recognizes the bypass as US 6, not the business route. Also worth noting is that the Roberts Expressway, which is now US 6, was at one point studied for possible incorporation into a planned Interstate 84 that would've connected Hartford and Providence. The project was killed in Rhode Island because there were fears of it polluting the Scituate Reservoir, which is Providence's main water supply. US 6 runs 25.4 miles in Rhode Island.
